If you borrow or rent airplanes, you need non-owned aircraft insurance—also known as renter's or borrower's insurance. This type of coverage should be as crucial to your personal pre-departure checklist as a valid medical certificate and flight review. Although it is not a legal requirement, make non-owned aircraft insurance your personal requirement, for both you and your family's protection.
Why should I buy?
Many pilots don't realize that when they rent or borrow an airplane, they may not be fully covered by the owner's primary policy. You may not have read the rental agreement with the flight school and realized you are responsible for the deductible or loss of use on the aircraft. Our non-owned insurance packages fill this potential gap and provide protection in the event of a loss for which you are found liable.
There are two types of coverage.
1) Liability coverage is for bodily injury and property damage you cause to someone else, either on the ground or as a passenger. This also includes defense coverage in the event you are sued by someone for damage which you caused. 2) Physical damage coverage covers a claim against you for your negligence which causes damage to the aircraft you are using. You can select various coverage limits for both liability and physical damage.
How much should I buy?
If using a non-owned aircraft in which you are not a named pilot you should select a coverage close to the value of the aircraft you are using. If you are renting from a flight school, you will need to ask what their minimum is, and what you are responsible for in the event of a loss, but it is recommended that you buy at least the minimum on liability coverage and the $5,000 in physical damage coverage. This coverage automatically applies to the deductible regardless of fault.
How do I apply?
Applying for coverage is quick and easy and we have made the process simple by packaging the common coverages into four comprehensive options that take the confusion out of buying or selecting the coverage that is right for you.
